padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; text-decoration: inherit;">Read Out Loud (And Repeat, Repeat, Repeat):
For most performers, there is no short cut to memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play out loud, over and over again. Most rehearsals encourage this by “running through the lines” or having a “read through.”

By the time opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times. In addition to constant repetition, consider these supplemental techniques:

Listen to Your Cast Members:
Sometimes inexperienced or poorly trained actors spend rehearsals staring blankly at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. Instead, they should be listening attentively, responding in character at all times.

This will not only generate a better performance, it will also help the actor learn his lines because the context of the dialogue is absorbed. Pay attention and the other person’s lines will serve as a cues or “memory triggers” during the performance.

Record Your Lines:
Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play’s dialogue during everyday activities. Turn your work-outs, chores, and recreational activities into a “read through” with the help of your headphones or your i-pod. Aside from constant rehearsals, this method seems to be the most popular way to memorize lines.

Use a tape recorder to capture the lines from each relevant scene. Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own. Then, they not only listen intently, but they speak all of the lines. Others opt for recording the lines of fellow cast members, but they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.

Monologue While Motoring
Personally, I have found the freeway to be to best place to memorize lines. I mastered all of my Shakespeare monologues driving back and forth on Highway 128. If your commute to work is twenty minutes or more, then your automobile can become a makeshift rehearsal space. For one, it’s a nice private place to listen to your recorded dialogue. Then, when you have the basic dialogue and monologues down, you can perform as your putter your way through traffic.

The acoustics in your car might be lousy; however, it’s a great place to guffaw, growl, or shout your lines, getting them nicely solidified in your memory banks. Hopefully, your carpool group won’t mind!

Get Up and Move!
Whenever possible, incorporate your stage directions while you say your lines aloud. The combination of movement and speech strengthens a person’s ability to recall the next line.

Here’s how Ms. Noice explains it: “Memory is aided by physical movement. In one study, lines learned while making an appropriate motion — e.g., walking across a stage — were more readily remembered by actors later than were lines unaccompanied by action.” So, during the early stages of learning the script, make certain your join the words with appropriate movements and gestures.

Think Positively and Don’t Panic!
Don’t let the butterflies in your stomach torment you too much. Most thespians experience stage fright minutes, hours, even weeks before opening night. While a certain amount of nervousness can get the adrenaline going, too much anxiety over lines might hinder an actor’s performance.

Actors forget lines now and then. It happens. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notices. Forgetting a line is only disastrous if the performer breaks character.

So, if you forget a line in the middle of your performance, don’t freeze. Don’t get flustered. Don’t look out to the audience. Don’t call out, “Line!” Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability, and with the help of your fellow cast members you will get back on track.

Take solace in the fact that if you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again! Sometimes embarrassment is the strongest and toughest method of memorization!

The Actor Whisperer

If John Pallotta were a boxer, he’d be Jake LaMotta. Marshall went back to acting school as a student, after hearing the entire buzz about Master Acting Teacher John Pallotta, of the John Pallotta Acting Studio in New York City.

Tonight I was taking a journey back into my past, to an acting class. I was on my way by train to New York City to interview the man everyone is calling the Actor Whisperer. With the discipline and skill of Lee Strasberg, the profound truth of Uta Hagen, and the storytelling of Bill Hickey, he is an acting teacher like no other – able to transform actors on the drop of a dime.

The meaning the Actor Whisperer was not clear in my thought process. I mean, was John mute or deaf? I guess I need to learn more by watching him as an instructor instead of trying to figure it out myself.

"Your fabulous teacher John Pallotta, a man dedicated to the craft of acting. You're all in very good hands! Keep Studying, keep learning, study the world and you'll be wonderful actors." Meryl Streep

Academy Award Winning Actress

As I walked in and signed into the class, I could feel the spirit of dramatic emotion in the room. Looking into the eyes of the students (and recognizable actors) I could see the dreams of Broadway and Hollywood manifested in their souls.

All of a sudden John Pallotta walks into the room saying "Hello". The room goes quiet to the sound of a pin drop, as the class becomes filled with eagerness and the motivation to move forward with their dreams to Act. John started class off with the aura of a prophet and launches the class by wanting to hear all the success stories of his students, no matter how big or small.

John started to critique; one by one the actors and actresses said their piece. Their confidence was there with the urge to succeed. John never once discouraged them, but he set them apart

from their thoughts and ideas. Restructuring them like he was a potter and they were his molded

clay, refining the bigger image of what the actor needs to portray. All in one night, I watched him whisper into their ears and with simple adjustments worked miracles.

He turned an advance actor into a masterpiece, and a woman who had never acted before was able to deliver one of the best monologues of the night. Their transformations, after simple adjustments, were extraordinary.

"Always be ready when opportunity comes and always listen to what John Pallotta has to say. He’s got a good heart, his head is in the right place and he’ll set you straight."

Kevin Kline

Academy Award Winner

It was time for a class break, the start of my Interview. John Pallotta of John Pallotta Acting Studio, Amanda Gordon, (a former classmate, now student and associate teacher) and I, Bryant D. Marshall of MizMacMarketing LLC., stepped outside to the busy and boisterous street of Manhattan so I could finally interview this man loved by many.

I started off by asking John who was he as a young boy? "Spats", aka John, tells me "I was just an ordinary Italian kid who grew up in the streets of Ozone Park and Howard Beach New York waiting tables for the likes of John Gotti and Sammy the Bull Gravano. John was prewriting the script of "Goodfellas", through the blueprint of his life. I asked him, when did the acting bug bite? Was it just a thing you liked or was it a passion?"

John looked at me with a smile, his eyes lit-up saying "Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon (1975) that was it for me". John continued telling me how in 1977, he enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Institute; studying under fame actor Lee Strasberg himself. In 1981 he continued his studies at HB Studios under such masters as Herbert Bergdorf, Uta Hagen and Bill Hickey. All in all John studied with more than 20 master acting teachers. Around 1981 John continued his studies with mentor Bill Hickey. John was taken under the wing of Bill Hickey, becoming a key student like Judd Hirsch (Taxi). Bill Hickey got his start in 1957 with his debuts in "Saturday Lost and Decoy", both TV series. Bill continued to work and polish John off and on. John was on tour doing the Hunchback of Notre Dame when learning of Bill’s death in 1997.

John continued by telling me about his career as an actor, amassing nearly 300 professional Actor credits and also being a Playwright; creating 21 plays and 3 screen plays. John’s Plays are inspiring others around the nation by being produced, work-shopped and read at such venues as Steppenwolf in Chicago, The Labyrinth Theatre, The Lambs Theatre, Theatre Row, The Actors Theatre of Louisville, KY and by Members of The Actors Studio in NYC. John Pallotta is the Artistic director of the well-established Cutting Edge Theatre Company 501(C) (3) which is a non-profit company, providing the opportunity for underprivileged teens to take the stage to show producers what they are made of.

In one years’ time John had three plays optioned; two for stage and three of his plays optioned for film. Due out later in 2011, is "How I killed my Roommate and Got away with It". "Jane Ho", an award winning play, will appear at Drom NYC April 21st. John’s most powerful new play, "Hustle", which is a cross between Pulp Fiction, Sin City and Shaft will also appear later this year. Now with 33 years of experience, John was not only teaching acting to students but started to receive former teachers as well. Bill Hickey, John’s mentor, did not get to see his student flourish to greatness,

but by this time it didn’t matter. John was polished liked fine gold. With all the time that I spent in school studying acting, in one night I learned a life lesson in 3 hours. As John continued to talk I was in awe of what he had accomplished as a professional playwright, actor, director and producer.

"John is as great if not greater than the mentors/teachers that taught him."

Amanda Gordon- former classmate associate teacher

I was almost finished, I asked John what is wrong with actors of today and why it is so hard for them to break into the business? John told me 90% of the actors are unprepared. They don’t want to put in the work of creating their craft; lacking passion, desire and discipline. John tells me that actors of today can’t fathom the hard work he put in to get the acting part.

With Amanda Gordon finally putting in her input, she tells us two great things about John saying "John puts the correct things in the actor/actress’s head putting them in position where they need to be."

For my last set of questions I asked John, what do you see with this acting school venture? With a thought and puzzled look on my face I had to stop him saying, "…if you could go to Hollywood and make money why not?" John says "this is my home, this is where I belong." Finally I asked, what are your goal(s) for the school? John ends by saying "I want it to grow."

In conclusion, John Pallotta is a master not just in acting but also in life. This joy that John spreads is like a gardener tending to his floral harvest as he waits for the spring season, watching his students blossom into something magnificently beautiful; true actors and actresses. John has had it all and now he is sowing the seed of acting into others as he watches his crop grow. Since John founded the studio five years ago he has received amazing reviews from such names as: Academy Award Winning Actress Meryl Streep, Academy Award and Tony Award Winner Kevin Kline, Emmy Award Winner James Brown, Emmy Award Winner S. Dixon, Emmy Award Winner Jenn Jiles, Film Icon Robert Downey Sr., Goodfellas and Bronx Tale Star Joseph Donofrio, 90's Sitcom Star Penwar from Family Matters and Tyler Perry’s Movies, Broadway Producer Ruben Brache, NBA Stars Roger Mason and Kyle Lowrey, Film Actor Josh Charles, B52's Kate Pierson, 30 Rock’s Matt Sternberg, and Life on Mars Dom Mancini. On any given advanced class, some listed above walk in to class unannounced, signing in like everyone else, and taking a seat waiting to see what John Pallotta has to say whispering in their ear.

The dream of the John Pallotta Acting Studio is alive and well. Every week at that same special time and place 7:00pm 358 West 44th Street New York City, a student enters this building with that Hollywood dream in their soul. The Actor Whisperer John Pallotta enters their minds, with a whisper in their ears and changing their thought processes. John Pallotta becomes their dream maker.

Entertainment Journalist

Bryant D. My Emmy Predictions List covers my best educated guess - a - mation as to who will be the winners and my reasons why. As an acting teacher in New York City I have always pushed my actors to be the best that they can be within themselves. I have taught them that, "Acting is "A STATE OF MIND" Its about Innocence, Imagination and Vulnerability. Its about practicing the potential qualities that you were born with. The less you think like an actor and the more childlike and innocent you are, the more productive and in the moment you will be." (Harry Mastrogeorge Quote).

As I watch the nominee picks this year, in all categories (as an Acting Teacher and Published Playwright) I have a tendency to look and dig deeper as to who should win an why. While the average viewer just sees the surface, they must realize acting is what they see on the screen and the performance takes place in the editing room. They must also realize that there are many people behind the scene that makes that one person look so darn good.
When you strip away the costumes, the lighting and sound, the cinematic effects, the director, and everything else that adds to the over picture, the best acting should be based on this:
Acting is standing up totally naked and turning around very slowly and telling the truth.
With that being said, here are my predictions for 2011:
<a class="kLink" href="http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=2439102791880117771#" id="KonaLink2" style="background-color: transparent !important; A few good shows and 50 Million Dollars for an open doesn`t make you a shoe-in. Alot of these are past their prime. Loved Mad Men, but many episodes were boring unless you were a fan glued to the tube and did not watch anything else. My choice: Game of Thrones.
Best comedy series:
Modern Family, 30 Rock, Glee, The Office, The Big Bang Theory, Parks and Recreation.
Parks and Recreation. This being the third time around, week after week after week I am still watching. With each episode, and the addition of talented cast members makes this my choice. Perfect structural writing, an ensemble cast full of talent, and Amy Poehler at the helm, this is an Emmy-winning show.
Drama actress:
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife; Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men; Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU; Kathy Bates, Harry`s Law; Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights and Mireille Enos, The Killing.
Julianna Margulies should have won last years Emmy but did not. Margulies is as good as it gets and will triumph this year. I am not only basing it on her submitted episode "In Sickness," but overall performance as an actor. Margulies is as versatile and dynamic an actor as Meryl Streep.
Comedy actor:
Steve Carell, The Office; Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock; Jim Parsons, Big Bang Theory; Matt LeBlanc, Episodes, Louis C.K., Louie; Johnny Galecki, Big Bang Theory.
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) should win from my point of view but won`t. He is not only a great actor, he is a Master of his Craft. If you have ever been lucky enough to sit in the same room as him and watch him talk to actors on the craft of acting you would bypass the Emmys and give him an Oscar. But because the Academy has a tendency of wanting to give Hardware away (Emmys) for sentimental reasons it will in fact go to Steve Carell (undeserved for a poor season) but he will win. My choice for 2012 if he keeps it up will be Louis C.K.
Drama actor:
Jon Hamm, Mad Men; Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire; Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights; Michael C. Hall, Dexter; Hugh Laurie, House; Timothy Olyphant, Justified.
It`s anybody`s game this year, except Steve Buscemi. Though gifted, Buscemi is not up to the acting chops of the others in his category. As I mentioned earlier, Acting is standing up totally naked and turning around very slowly and telling the truth. Hamm does that and will win, win, win...
Comedy actress:
Tina Fey, 30 Rock; Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie; Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation; Laura Linney, The Big C; Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope; Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly.
Hands down, Amy Poehler, (Parks and Recreation). Any actors goal is to reach the maximum effect with the least amount of effort when it comes to acting. All of these woman are gifted and talented. She works her ass off to make it look that easy.
Supporting drama actor:
Andre Braugher, Men of a Certain Age; John Slattery, Mad Men; Alan Cumming, The Good Wife; Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones; Josh Charles, The Good Wife; Walton Goggins, Justified.
This year brings another group of talented actors into the mix, new and old faces alike. I would like Josh Charles to win only because I`ve had the honor of running lines with him back in 2008 for a Broadway audition for the play Orphans. Even though Peter Dinklage is a fan favorite, my money is on Alan Cummings.
Supporting comedy actor: Ty Burrell, Modern Family; Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family; Ed O`Neill, Modern Family; Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family; Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men; Chris Colfer, Glee.
In this case, I wish I could "recommend" instead of predicting. Honorable mention firstly to Jon Cryer for doing a damn good staright man against you know who. Chris Colfer on the other hand did not have to suffer as Jon did and will probably walk away with the hardware this year. He is an immense acting talent and can play comedy as easily as the more dramatic.
Supporting comedy actress: Julie Bowen, Modern Family; Sofia Vergara, Modern Family; Jane Lynch, Glee; Betty White, Hot in Cleveland; Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live; Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock.
This is the category that I really wish they would drop for this year. No one does anything for me this year in this category. If I had to make a choice I would probably go with Bowen.
Supporting drama actress: Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife; Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire; Christine Baranski, The Good Wife; Michelle Forbes, The Killing; Margo Martindale, Justified; Christina Hendricks, Mad Men.

A career to follow, from Julliard to Broadway. Christine Baranski has it all with Tony Awards, Screen Actors Guild Award, American Comedy Award and yes she has won an Emmy. Baranski is a great actress and nobody in my opinion has her range.

Actors are made by their own desire to be great

Inspired by his gift for providing deep insight with quiet, well-chosen words, John Pallotta at John Pallotta Studio www.johnpallotta.com is quickly becoming one of the top acting coaches and on set coaches in New York City. The Studio was created so actors can work on their craft every week.

I remember William Hickey quoting Rosalind Russell back in 1980; “Acting is standing up naked and turning around very slowly”. He also said “Actor must be like children playing in the field that have forgotten all the rules”.

I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as 'acting' there is only ‘life’. John’s technique is based on his belief that “Acting is A STATE OF MIND. It is about Innocence, Imagination and Vulnerability. It is about practicing the potential qualities that you were born with. The less you think like an actor and the more childlike and innocent you are the more productive” and in the moment “you will be”. (Harry Mastrogeorge)

I was taught a long time ago, as a young actor in the late 1970s, that when you bring your love of the craft to class, you change the way other actors and teachers look at you. Take that same love for the craft and apply it to the stage or set, you change the way the actors, industry and audience look at you and allows you to fulfill your desire to be great.

Anyone can say that they are an actor, but can they deliver what it truly means to be an actor. It’s much more then expensive headshots, more than just smiling for the camera or the way you walk into a room. It’s about being a part of something greater than just yourself, it is your heart as an actor, the colors of your soul, the way you wake each and every morning and question the universe, your very being as an actor and a person, and this thing we all do and want to be successful at.

Kevin Spacy said it best in an Actors Studio interview - "Too many young actors walk around with no idea why they’re doing what they're doing. That there is no prize and the only prize is what is in your heart and what you feel and what you want to accomplish. To want and to be ambitious and successful is not enough - that is just desire! To know what you want, to understand why you’re doing it, to dedicate every breath in your body to achieve. If you feel you have something to give or your particular talent is something worth developing, is worth caring for, then there is nothing you can't achieve."

My Method is aimed exclusively at unleashing the actor’s emotional power. My aim as a teacher of the craft is to help each and every one of my students find their own voice as an actor. Acting is a process. It is a journey of discovery. It is a living breathing process that happens each and every day and does not happen overnight. Becoming an actor is learning a new way of thinking and about the way you look at life. Just as you make choices in life that determine your success or your failure. It goes the same for your choices you make as an actor.

Good acting requires that you study in order to master the craft. My method, teaches actors how to achieve and respond to honest emotions both on and off-camera by utilizing certain principles: Innocence, Imagination and Vulnerability, Instincts and Imagination. Using these principles encourages actors to experience rather than indicate an emotion. Not just see a character, become them. Not just become them, become a living breathing thinking human being. We work on this on a conscious level in the classroom so my students can use it on a subconscious level on a set or stage. I don't waste time dictating about whose method is best; I encourage my students to conflate different methods and find out what works for them. I also teach them to turn it into performance.

Some of the actors that have been either taught, directed or coached by John Pallotta include: Yvette Ganier - Broadway-Miracle Worker, King Hedley II Obie Award Winner, Joseph Donofrio - Goodfellas, Bronx Tale, Jungle Fever, Patrice Covington – Grammy Nominated Broadway - Dream Girls, Donna Pallotta, Darrel Kieth Harris - Do The Right Thing, Bianca Sloof- aka Bubbles - VH1, Creep Dogg - Musical Artist, Asa (Angela) Arnold - TV Sitcom - Are We There Yet, Penwah - Tyler Perry Movies, Family Matters, Dom Mancini - Life on Mars, Anna Chlumsky - My Girl, Law and Order, 30 Rock, Dan Griffin - Shadow of The Badge, Matt Sternberg - 30 Rock, Stephanie Klemons - RENT & They do this every where they go.

All, mother fuckn’ life on the planet earth, according the the razamataz, human included have been scientifically created in laboratories by the alot-a-vaginic people from space. The had developed the perfect mastery of genetic engineering and DNA synthesis, which means, they no longer fuck. That’s why I had to get the hell off that planet. Traces of this fact can be found in the oldest book, the Bible, old and new alike. Oh, they tried to make me stay and I said, fuck you, no fuck, no stay. Be gone...

They ask me, what do I think of the homeless. Well, the homeless, according to the Karma Sutra, we are all born on he planet Earth, therefore we are not homeless. The homeless people, if they were homeless, have no place to go, if they are homeless in the first place.

Divorce on the other hand, is simply a state of mind. Marriage is a source of happiness. Divorce makes it happy.

Now let me tell ya bout UFO"S. UFO'S don't exist, why, because "they" think that we don't exist. That's the mother fuckin' truth. It's a love-hate thing. You know the situation. The way I see it, there's no life on the planet earth, therefore why should there be life on other planets. Aliens are strange kinds of people. They gotta agenda. There bosses employ them and send them to our planet for one reason and one reason alone, to suck the mother fuckin' blood out of all of us. And also they come down here to get us mother fuckin' bitches pregnant. And dats, dat.

When they come down here, to get us bitches pregnant, that is, they telescope the proximity until's they find the right bitch. Then they walk over, no. I take that back they energize. They disappear from one mother fucker spot and energize to another mother fucker spot. The aliens got skills, I tell you, they got skills. They never walk,no sireee, the aliens that is. They float. Their big green heads and mother fuckin' thyroid eyes also "Da" flat assess. By the way, that's the only reason the aliens go after us white bitches. For our flat tushes. And that's a mother fucker fact. You don't go seeing no mother fuckin' aliens with... With chocolate green pumped up tushes, do's ya. That's my estimation of the situation.

Me...I been with all the mother fuckin' aliens in he galaxy, the white ones, the black ones, the Spaniards. I even had doose mulatto aliens. I been with every alien all over the mother fuckin' galaxy.

Danger Will Robinson, danger... Run, run, run. Now that's the mother fucker. He's pumped up more bitch Ho aliens than John Glenn and Doctor Smith combined. That's why the boy looks so good. I'm telling you. The boy got skills, skills I tell you, way beyond that of mortal man. I tell you, I flew, I flew around with the mother fucker, boy. While his father is figuring out how to save the planets from the Romulins. Will's busy trying to figure out how to increase the mother fucking population. I said, enough, dammit. Beam me down to the fucking planet now mother fucker before I zap your little white ass. By the way, we don't talk any more. Fuck him.

One last situation, before I discombobulate myself. If the aliens are like they say they are, smart enough to travel through out the hemisphere's. Then why do the mother fuckin' aliens keep abducting the dumbest mother fucking people on earth. That's my estimation of the situation. I fear the worst is yet to come. Danger Will Robinson, run... run...

<div style="font-size: 11px; My Emmy Predictions List covers my best educated guess - a - mation as to who will be the winners and my reasons why. As an acting teacher in New York City I have always pushed my actors to be the best that they can be within themselves. I have taught them that, "Acting is

"A STATE OF MIND" Its about Innocence, Imagination and Vulnerability.

<span style="background-attachment: initial !important; A few good shows and 50 Million Dollars for an open doesn`t make you a shoe-in. Alot of these are past their prime.

<span style="background-attachment: initial !important; As I mentioned earlier, Acting is standing up totally naked and turning around very slowly and telling the truth.

Judyth Piazza chats with Revered Acting Coach John Pallotta

One-Day FREE Playwriting Intensive With Award-Winning Playwright

One-Day FREE Playwriting Intensive With Award-Winning Playwright, Actor, Coach and author of 19 plays John Pallotta

Visit the Studio at
http://www.johnpallotta.com/

John Pallotta Studios is holding is second annual Free Playwriting / Screenwriting Intensive and is seeking participants for a free one-day Playwriting Intensive, designed to help writers learn how to write their own play.
